Information for Teachers

Are you a high school STEM teacher?

Would you like to perform scientific research during the summer?

This opportunity is funded by the NSF BIORETS grant (Research Experiences for Teachers Sites in Biological Sciences (BIORETS))

The idea behind this research opportunity is for high school teachers to learn about antimicrobial resistance, perform a research experiment, and then use these experiences to develop curriculum to take back to your students.

Objectives of the program for teachers:

  1. Gain an understanding of AMR and the interconnectedness of human, animal and ecosystem health (OneHealth)

  2. Practice research design

  3. Translate summer research into active learning activities that address Minnesota Academic Standards in Science and introduce career opportunities

  4. Incorporate inclusive teaching principles in the classroom.

Objectives of the program for your high school students:

  1. Engage in OneHealth and AMR through active learning
  2. Develop an increased sense of belonging in STEM
  3. Increase STEM agency and take action to prevent the spread of AMR

Program timeline (starting in 2025 with our first cohort of teachers)

Timeline of the program

Cohorts of 8 teachers will arrive mid-summer for a 6.5 week program. Gray bars represent orientation days that include safety training and common lab techniques.  Partially filled in icons represent teachers from rural areas.  Tan bars represent days spent on research activity. Gold bars represent time spent with the entire cohort of teachers and mentors.  Three teacher cohorts are represented by blue (1), orange (2) and green (3) icons.  Light yellow bars at the beginning of the timeline represent orientation activities for research mentors (gray icons).  Green bars represent presentations mentors/PI/Co-PI will make for the ACHIEVE career and college readiness program. Red bars represent 2 meetings to review/revise curriculum plans pre-implementation (teachers/mentors/PI and co-PI), curriculum implementation and a fourth meeting for review. Travel includes the Minnesota Conference on Science Education (MnCOSE) meeting for teacher mentors and the national BIORETs meeting (for select participants). Not shown: 4 Research mentor/PI/Co-PI meetings to review teacher’s experience during the summer.
